![]() ![]() ![]() Books already published about Indigenous people, including Colin Tatz's books in sports, Clinton Walker's in music and the many publications that recount stories of the Stolen Generations, are all powerful books, as they give Indigenous people a voice and welcome other people into our stories. This is the first book I have read that captures so many different people's lives and their experiences of growing up Aboriginal. This wide array of voices captured in the collection is a key component of the book and allows for its readers to find a story that resonates with them and their journey of growing up Aboriginal. The collection in its entirety is presented as a reflective experience of many parts of Australia -all stories that deserve to be spoken and listened to. ![]() The collection's overall theme of growth shows the breadth of experience of Aboriginal people's lives and journeys. Each contributor puts forward his or her truth and is admirably able to condense the complicated and emotional journey of growing up Aboriginal in Australia into a mere few pages. This book's 50-plus contributors are organised in alphabetical order to give a sense of equal weighting to each contributor's story. It is an uplifting recount of our own people, our own stories and our own social, cultural and interpersonal strengths. Growing up Aboriginal in Australia, edited by Anita Heiss, is an honest, poignant and often heartbreaking collection of short stories. ![]()
